Environmental problem targeted

The project focuses on pollution of groundwater and aquifers with nitrates and atmosphere with ammonia, due to the use of chemical fertilizers in agriculture. It must be underlined that:

• After fertilization, crops take up a relatively small part of added nitrogen compounds, namely 30-40%
• Since nitrates are water soluble, the residue ends up in groundwater and surface water through soils, generating water pollution
• Moreover, a part of nitrogen not adsorbed by the crops and plants, may be lost as evaporated ammonia
